Hartmann Controls is a world-class manufacturer of scalable, access control solutions that'll provide you with the right equipment to secure a single door or an entire building. We're excited to offer this integration as a natural extension to all our Access Management features, in addition to giving you the flexibility and ease of mind that comes with Hartman's versatile security technology.

In this article:

1. Before getting started

It’s important to understand the difference between access management and access control as you begin using the SmartRec and Hartmann Controls integration.

Access Management

Access Control

Access Management refers to the processes used by an organization to decide when, where, and how resources should be accessed.

In SmartRec, the Access Management overview allows admins to monitor all visitor entries with security features that include participant profiles, tracking child pick-ups, check-outs, account balances and entry blockers.

Access control is a means of safeguarding and controlling your assets, people, technology, and information.

Physical locked barrier: Turnstiles, doors, gates, etc.

By a person: front desk, security guard, etc.

With credentials: Website Log in/Password, etc.

In Hartmann Controls' access control management interface Protector.Net, you'll see the following terms:

Key terms

Definition

Door

A turnstile, a door and/or gate

SSL Certificate

Digital certificate that authenticates a website's identity and enables an encrypted connection.

Controller

Communicates between the input/output hardware device and the computer.

API Key

An application programming interface (API) key is a code used to identify and authenticate an application or user.

They also act as a unique identifier and provide a secret token for authentication purposes.

2. How to activate Hartmann Controls in 3 steps

Step 1: Speak with a Hartmann Controls specialist

Interested in Hartmann? The first step is to notify the Amilia team by contacting your Customer Success Manager; or email us at support@amilia.com. We'll connect you with a Hartmann Controls specialist to discuss your security needs and help you install Protector.Net. to a computer (to be used for future logins to Protector.Net.).

  • You must create login credentials for Hartmann's access control system Protector.Net, which serves as an interface to configure your Hartmann controller hardware. We recommend using a generic login email and password for your organization that isn't reliant on a specific administrator.

  • You must generate a Hartmann API key. This should be done after the initial setup and Administrator creation in Protector.Net. After the Administrator has been added, navigate to the Edit Administrator screen for the Service Account Administrator. Click the API Key tab and then the Generate button to generate an API. You may download and refer to Hartmann's Software Setup Guide (p.153).

    • In the Administrator's profile, be sure to enable the special permission Pulse Door permission (p.151).

  • You will need a proper SSL certificate in Protector.Net, which is required to encrypt web traffic between the Proctector.Net server and any 3rd party client connections (in this case, your organization). You will be given instructions on how to obtain one. You may also download and refer to Hartmann's Software Setup Guide (p.348-351).

Step 2: Turn on the Hartmann Controls app in SmartRec

Once the setup in Protector.Net is complete, log into SmartRec. In the Apps tab, search and select the Hartmann Controls app. Click the Activate button, followed by the Configure button. Set the provider to Hartmann Controls. Input your Hartmann Controls URL (provided by Hartmann) and your Hartmann Controls API key. The API key expires one year from the date it's generated. A new API key must be generated in Protector.Net and input in this field when the older one expires.

Click Submit to finish. The integration remains active until you choose to Disable it.

Step 3: Link your door(s) to your access point in SmartRec

In SmartRec, go to the Access Management tab to create (or edit) an access point as usual. In the General section, refer to the Door ID field. A door ID is available for each access point equipped with Hartmann technology. Refer to the Door ID(s) in your Hartmann account (i.e., Protector.Net) and input the right ID for the access point. Save when finished.

To find the door ID, log in to Protector.Net and then scroll down the Home screen to the section titled Hardware. Click on the Doors icon. Click the blue button next to the Door you'd like to configure. Look at the top of the page to the URL to see the door ID (ex: /#doors/edit/[id]).

3. How access is granted in SmartRec using Hartmann

In terms of using Hartmann technology, think of it like a controller on a garage door that you unlock using a remote in your car. You can benefit from all of Access Management's features with additional security tools that automatically unlocks your door when a participant is eligible for entry, based on the access point settings.

When a successful scan is logged in Access Management, SmartRec contacts Hartmann through the API key and the corresponding door(s) will open. You can follow door activity by logging in to Protector.Net.
